.: Uranus

from the eye of an astronomer

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and belongs to the group of gaseous planets. It was discovered on March 13, 1781, when the amateur astronomer William Herschel, came upon the Uranus planet which he thought was a comet or nebula. Uranium was the first planet discovered with the use of a telescope. All the other planets, except Neptune, had been previously known, for many centuries, to ancient peoples who lived on Earth. The distance of Uranus from the Sun is slightly more than 19 astronomical units. It turns around the Sun in 84 earthly years and rotation around its axis completes in 17 hours and 14 minutes. Its diameter is 51,118 km, which makes it the third largest planet in the solar system. Uranus has thin rings of dust and stones, the size of about 2 meters. The rings extend for a distance of 100 km from the Earth's surface. So far, the 27 natural satellites are known to circle around Uranus, of which Titania is the largest with a diameter of 1577 km and orbits at a distance of 436 270 km.
